When I took this position, I was unsure of my design skills and my ability to use adobe software. I have had a few classes going over the basics of these programs but I haven’t had many positions that called me to actually use them. I was expecting to maybe use these programs once or twice, but I have learned that I will be using InDesign almost every day. Another thing that I didn’t expect coming into this position was the use of Canva for designing and creating materials. I figured since Georgia 4-H is an extension program, it would be encouraged to steer away from Canva, but I have found the opposite to be true. Canva works extremely well in our organization because we can create promotional materials and they can be easily accessible by anyone in the state office or extension offices. Along with this, Josie has created branding kits for our organization that make it incredibly easy to create designs across programs with consistent branding and style. I feel like I have a good grasp on how to use Adobe InDesign and Premiere Pro, but there are always things to learn to make better products and work more efficiently. Any time I run into a problem or need assistance, I turn to Josie for support because she has more experience in these programs, but many times it is easier for me to get on YouTube and watch a tutorial. This is a great resource for learning how to better use these programs because there are hundreds of free tutorials. This is one skill that I bring to the PR department’s workflow, being self-sufficient. If I have trouble learning something, and Josie or others are busy, I will teach myself the skill. Another unique perspective I bring to my position is my background in photography and art. I have grown up taking pictures with my grandma, and this position sometimes requires photography and using photos to create design elements. With this job, I will have many interpersonal opportunities to learn about working in a large organization and on different teams. I have worked directly with the events team and the project S.A.F.E. teams, who create materials for programming, and I am excited to learn more about each team's individual needs.
